Step in time...

I know it seems like all I do is go see shows on broadway and this past week has been no exception. I saw Memphis which just won a Tony award to best musical, last night I saw Mary Poppins, and this weekend I saw Fences with Denzel Washington. I was tipped off earlier that I needed to wake up early to get in line for the cheap tickets to see that show. It was nuts! I am glad I woke up early or I definitely wouldn't have seen it. I got there at 6:45 and was 7th in line. The first person got there at 5:30. And by the time the doors opened at 10 there were more than 50 people in line. But I had some good company. I've noticed there is a group of the same people who tend to wake up early to wait for tickets and I seen some of them a few times while waiting in line.

Earlier last week I went on a shoot to a book publishing company for a story we are doing. Being there just made me want to read, which I honestly don't do that often. But I got a couple new books from there and I'm anxious to get into them. I tried to start reading one of the books while I was waiting in line for tickets, but I'm the kind of person who needs to read in complete silence and you aren't going to get that on the streets of NYC. There were so many people around, I think some dogs were sniffing for drugs in 3 cars across the street, and someone else was power sawing the concrete sidewalk. Needless to say, it was very distracting while I was trying to read.

I'm looking forward to this weekend. I have a couple of things planned with friends. I think the Ball State-ers living in NYC are going to get together and go out one night. I also want to go and see the Macy's fireworks on Sunday. And I'm sure I will fit another show in there somewhere. Plus I feel that there are a lot of touristy things I still need to do that I haven't done yet.

Tick-tock! Only a month and a half left here. I can't believe it's almost half over!

"In the meanwhile..."

Well I knew the job was dangerous when I started. I am bad at keeping up on blogs and I knew I would be. But here is an update on what's been going on for the last two weeks.

I officially started my internship. I think writing about specifics of what I'm doing online is not allowed. So I will be brief. I am enjoying it a lot. Meeting a lot of new people and learning a lot of new things. It's neat to see what I do on a completely new level. It's so different from what I was expecting, too!

Usually when I get home from my internship I just want to go to bed. Which is a total waste of being in the city, and I'm trying to change that. Most of my fun happens on the weekends. I have been seeing a lot of shows on broadway. The student rush is amazing! I never thought I was going to be able to see as many shows as I have, but I am able to get into most of them for around $30 a pop. It's really difficult to say which one is my favorite because they are all so good.

I was extremely happy to get to see A Little Night Music with Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury. I woke up super early to get tickets when the box office opened and when I finally got to the theater there was a long line of people already there! I was so nervous I wouldn't get a ticket. And when the guy finally opened the door is was completely unorganized and people cut and blah blah blah I wound up yelling at some old lady who was trying to steal my ticket. But alas, I got a ticket for the matinee.

Now in case you are not a broadway fanatic, A Little Night Music is a classic Stephen Sondheim musical. I have thought his music was amazing for a long time, even though I've never seen one of his shows. When I finally got in the theater and looked at my playbill, I was excited to find out that I knew some of the songs from the show! I get so giddy at musicals it's almost embarrassing! As soon as the curtain rose and the first note of the overture played, my eyes started welling up with tears because I was so excited. Let's just say the water flow didn't stop for the entire 3 hour performance. Again I've followed Sondheim's music for a while and finally getting to hear the lyrics in context with the story gave everything a whole new meaning. I LOVED IT!

Anyway, after the show I always try to go and get the celebrities autographs. However, I was at the matinee and most of them won't come out until after the evening performance. So I went back later to get Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury's autograph. Unfortunately, Lansbury is old and doesn't come out for the autograph parade after any shows ever! But I was able to get Catherine Zeta Jones' so that's exciting!

So here are some of my playbills:

A Little Night Music - Catherine Zeta Jones

Promises, Promises - Kristen Chenoweth, Sean Hayes

A Behanding in Spokane - Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell

God of Carnage - Lucy Liu, Jeff Daniels

...Another cool thing that I got to do was go to a Katie Perry album listening party. Unfortunately I don't have any photos to commemorate the occasion. Her new album coming out in a few months, Teenage Dream, (which she says she wanted to call 'Teenage Wet Dream') was pretty good. I haven't always been the biggest Katie Perry fanatic, but I enjoyed it. Lots of fun party dance songs on it! She was super nice as well, kind of vulgar at times (she's marrying Russell Brand, what do you expect?) but she was nice!

Today I went to the Brooklyn Bridge with my friend Zach (you know, the Letterman Scholar). We went to pier 17 and had lunch then walked across the bridge and took some pictures. It was so hot outside today. Sidenote: We have free HBO in the hotel where we are staying at and I just recently watched Kate and Leopold. So it was kinda neat to see "the erection" after watching the movie.

They're creepy and they're cooky

So, this week I've learned all about student rush tickets on broadway and I'm trying to take full advantage of it before I start my internship next week.

Yesterday I was able to see two shows for $70. It was awesome! I was researching tickets online and at 1:30 decided to go to the 2:00 matinee of Addams Family. So I grabbed all of my stuff and ran down to the theater. I was really surprised how good my seats were, too. For that show I was only 4 rows from the stage. I was absolutely in love with the show. The set was AMAZING! I love how all the pieces rotate and come out of the ground to make the different scenes. It was also really nice to see Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane in the leading roles! After the show, I was able to get autographs from most of the cast (Lane and Neuwirth never came our of the backstage door).

After coming back home for a couple minutes I went back to 45th street to see Billy Elliot. That show was very good as well. I don't know what my problem is though with understanding English accents. I feel like I missed a lot of the jokes because I couldn't understand. So that was a little frustrating. But the dancing was phenomenal!

Tonight I bought tickets for A Behanding in Spokane with Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell. This show is closing on Sunday so I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to get a seat. I'm sure it will be great! I'll update you all about it later :)

Until then.

Start spreading the news...

I've been in NYC for 5 days now and it's still hard to believe that I am going to spend the entire summer here. I flew in Friday with my parents and they stayed out here for the weekend with me to help get me settled.

On Saturday we did a little sight seeing. We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My favorite part of the museum was seeing all the paintings by artists I grew up learning about in art class like Van Goh, Degas and Monet. It just gives me kind of an erie feeling being around those famous paintings.

And my dad is a big fan of Salvador Dali, so I was sure to check out some of his artwork as well.

After visiting the Met, we went to dinner at a little diner that was downstairs from our hotel at the Wellington. I didn't think it was very good at all and the food was waaaaay over priced (my mom's biggest complaint about the whole trip). But after dinner we went to go see Jersey Boys on Broadway. My boyfriend's parents have seen that show several times and always talk about how good it is, so I was very excited to see it. The show is about the life of Frankie Valli. I was happy that I knew several of the songs in the show because going into it I didn't think I would. But the show was very good and I would recommend seeing it to anyone!

Sunday was move in day for me. But first we decided to go to Carlo's Bakery (the Cake Boss) for breakfast. But just a warning... if you are in New York City and you want to go out of the city, DO NOT TAKE A CAB. The cab ride was ridiculously priced to drive us five miles to the bakery. But aside from all that, the food was delicious! I was expecting everything to be overly sweet and sugary, but it was perfect. I had two little pastries and I wish I had gotten more. I really wanted to try a cannoli, but my mom talked me out of it because every one she's ever had were gross.

After breakfast we got me all moved into the New Yorker. Move in was a very easy process. It didn't take long to get my ID and get all organized in my new space! My roommate is nice. We seem to be getting along well so far. She will be interning at Morgan Stanley starting next week.

After I moved in, we walked down the road to Kmart to get a couple of other items for my room. But unfortunately while we were crossing the street, Eric took a misstep and tore his Achilles tendon. So, he couldn't really walk around NYC anymore for the rest of the weekend. My mom and I even had to hunt down some crutches for him so he can walk. So, my mom and I were on our own for the rest of the day while Eric rested (and watched the Indy 500) in their hotel room.

We found where my internship would be. It's a loooong walk, so I will probably take the subway more often than not. I start next week on the 7th.

On Monday, I woke up early and had breakfast with my parents again before they were headed back to Indiana. It was sad saying goodbye to them because now I'm really on my own in the city. But I will miss them a lot and I'm glad they were able to come here this weekend and help me with everything.

Later that afternoon I went down to Battery Park and Ground Zero with my roommate, Zach and Tyler. They're really making some progress on building the 9/11 Memorial.

Other than that, I miss everyone from home a lot. And I hope to hear from you all. I have postcards coming in the mail soon.

Finished packing

I think I am finally packed for New York. One of my friends who studied abroad a few semesters ago in England gave me the idea to use those air tight bags to pack my clothes into. I was able to pack everything I think I need for the summer into two suitcases. It was a miracle. However, if I decide to buy anything while I'm gone (which let's be honest, I will) I have no idea how I am going to fit anything else into those suitcases. It took several tries rearranging all my stuff to make it fit.

I also packed a present my boyfriend, Bud, gave me to take along. He is a tiny horse that we named Horace. I imagine he will sitting on my window sill at the New Yorker.

My mom and Eric are flying to New York with me this weekend. I'm glad they will be there to help me get settled. It also makes me feel a lot more comfortable and safe knowing there will be other students from Ball State around throughout the summer.

1.5 days to NYC. I can't believe it's finally here.
